Can I extend my Two Year Working Holiday visa?
No, this visa is granted for a maximum of two years only, but you may apply for a 6 months visitor’s visa without leaving the UK.
Does my Two Year Working Holiday visa count towards qualifying for permanent residence?
Two Year Working Holiday visas, Student visas, Tourist visas and Fiance visas do only qualify towards permanent residence if you stay in the UK legally for a continuos period of ten years and you qualify under the ten year concession.
Can I work on my Student visa?
Yes, if your course is longer than 6 months, you are allowed to work for a maximum of 20 hours per week on a Student visa.
I am currently on a work permit and want to change my status to the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP). What happens to my permanent residence application?
The work permit and HSMP are the only two permits that, added together, count towards the five years required to qualify for permanent residence.
I am currently in the UK on a tourist visa and engaged to be married to a British national. After the wedding, can I apply for my spousal visa from within the UK?
No, as a visitor your immigration status cannot be changed from within the UK. You have to submit an application at the British High Commission or Embassy in your country of residence.

I am currently on a Visitor’s visa. Can I apply for a work permit while I’m in the UK?
No, you are not allowed to change your status whilst in UK. You will need to return to your country of residence and apply for entry clearance as a work permit holder before returning to the UK.
I am currently on a work permit and have been offered a position with another company. Can I transfer my work permit from one employer to another?
Work permits are not transferable. However, your new employer can apply for a new work permit (sometimes called a ‘switch’) for you.
Can I change my status from a Working Holidaymaker visa to a work permit?
Yes, if your position is on the list of shortage occupation. If not, you are required to obtain Entry Clearance at the British Embassy/High Commission in your country of residence.
For how long is a work permit valid?
A work permit can be valid for any length of time from one day to a maximum of five years.
Does a work permit lead to permanent residence and ultimately British citizenship?
Yes, provided that you have been on a work permit, or work permits where there have been no gaps in between, for a continuous period of five years.
My wife is a dependent on my work permit. Will she be eligible for permanent residence?
Yes, provided she has spent five years continuously in the UK as your dependent.
How long does it take to gain a work permit?
The work permit process can take anywhere from one to eight weeks, depending on the type of permit and the people involved. Once the permit is approved, the next stage is to apply for ‘further leave to remain’ at the Home Office or Entry Clearance at your nearest British High Commission/Embassy. Once this has been stamped in your passport and you have received your approval letter, you are ready to start working.
